The new RN job market can be tough. Even with continuing projections of a nursing shortage it seems many graduating students continue to have difficulty finding a full time job.
Each time you nervously step foot in that new hospital area you have the opportunity to impress a potential employer. Here are some tips to help you land that job!
1) Introduce yourself. Get to know the RNs on the floor, the charge nurse and the Nurse Director.
2) Carry a resume. If and when the opportunity arises present your resume to the hiring manager.
Talk to them about your learning opportunity on their unit. Tell them about any staff who have been particularly helpful with your experience.
3) Gather business cards. You may need and want these contacts after graduation.
4) Make notes. It is easy to forget names, units, scope of service several clinicals later.
5) Ask if there are any potential for Nurse interns on this unit. Landing the job pre graduation could sure up your chances for an RN job.
6) Treat each clinical experience as if it was your first day on a new job. Dress neatly, arrive on time, ask questions and be noticed. This is your opportunity for an employer to see you in their workplace. You will not get the same chance after your graduation and during a typical interview process.
7) Realize the difference between ultimate goals and short term success. You probably will not get that labor and delivery position as a new RN but you can work towards it as a Med Surg RN.
8) Customer service remains a key component when searching for staff. Remember this during clinicals!
Make your own opportunity! Good luck as you work toward graduation. Feel free to add any additional steps that have worked for you!
